Installation and Operation of Mud Gas Separator

The mud-gas separator separates the free gas from the contaminated mud leaving the choke manifold before it is routed to the degasser. Entrained gas is extracted at the degasser.
The mud-gas separator can be installed as:

  • A skid mounted horizontal or vertical unit outside a mud tank;
  • United with the trip tank.

The size of the mud-gas separator should be such that it can handle the fluid and gas which is bled off via the choke manifold safely. Minimum dimensions and configurations of various types of mud-gas separators are given in (click link).
The following shall be met when configurating the pipe work for the mud/gas separator:

  • There are to be no valves, pipe expansion or contractions within 3 m (10 ft) of the inlet nozzle;
  • If a bend is required in the feed pipe it shall be in a vertical plane through the axis of the feed nozzle;
  • The pipe reducer of the gas outlet line should be no nearer to the top of the vessel than 0.6 m (2 ft).

The gas outlet line shall be a minimum of 200 mm (8″). If the vent exists more than 40 m (130 ft) from the vessel this vent line diameter should be increased to ensure that the back pressure in the vent line does not exceed 15 kPa (2 psi), at a gas flowrate of 0.2 x 106 m3 (st)/d (7 MMscf/d). No reduction in any vessel dimension is permitted.
No other internals (e.g. mist mats) are permitted due to their unsuitability for the rugged service.
The mud-gas separator shall have one or more vent lines leading a safe distance downwind from the well.  Low places in the vent lines should be avoided in order to prevent liquids being trapped in them.
Never connect the choke manifold and/or mud-gas separator discharge lines directly to the degasser (always have an open pipe).

The mud-gas separator shall not be operated above its design limitation. Operating outside of this envelop will give poor mud/gas separation and the possibility of gas blow through. An additional unit with dedicated vent line shall be installed when the mud-gas separator capacity is insufficient for the well to be drilled.

Desander Hydrocyclones are used to provide efficient and reliable separation of sand and solids from produced water, condensate and gas stream. They have proven to be a valuable part of many oil and gas production facilities. The cyclone liner size and type selected is dependent on the process fluid, temperature, pressure and the concentration and type of solids present in the liquid ( Water or oil) or gas stream.

For the work principle of hydrocyclones, it works like this. Firstly, the drilling fluids are sucked up to 0.25Mpa ~ 0.4Mpa by sand pump, and enter into the cones through the side inlet which is normally only 2-1/2″ diameter. Then The fluids flow spirally inside of the cone. Effected by the centrifugal force, the heavy solids in the fluids would be throw towards to the inner wall of the cones, go down to the bottom, and discharge through the sand discharge port, while the light fluids would go up and discharge through the upper outlet. The diameter of the bottom discharge port is adjustable, and with a cover of hydrocyclone.


As an quick-wear part of desander, the lifetime of hydrocyclones is not so long as other parts. So it is neccessary to check their working condition, and replace them with new ones. As a whole set of the hydrocyclone, clamps & flang are also replaced together with the hydrocyclones.

How to Install and Maintain the Desilter


Install and maintain the desilter is important for drilling works, as a part of solids control.


  1. Install and debug: The slurry cleaner is mainly consisting of vibrating sieve, distributary manifold and swirled, etc. having the slurry exit of the sand pump and pipe elbow of liquid going-in of slurry cleaner connected with 6″rubber hose, pipe elbow of liquid going-in able to circumrotate round the vertical axial line with arbitrary angle. The four major component assemblies are the rotating assembly, the frame and casing together, and the drive and back-drive assemblies. The rotating assembly includes the bowl, beach, conveyor and gearbox. It is the most important (and expensive) part of the decanter, where all the work is done, and which contains the most sophisticated technology, both process and mechanical. For such a heavy component, weighing up to several tons and producing a force field of several thousand g, a high level of precision engineering is required, followed by precise balancing.
Bearing and seals used in the rotating assembly and gearbox are an important part of the decanter. Bearings in general have to be lubricated to work properly. To do this, seals separate the lubricated bearings from the process environment, both to protect the bearings and to avoid contamination of the product or environment, by the lubricant. Seals are also needed to contain process liquids and vapours within the centrifuges casing. Seals are especially important where the process requires a positive pressure or vacuum, and where vapours are flammable or toxic.

Primary purpose of shale shaker

Shale shaker is a general term for a vibrating device used to screen solids from a circulating drilling fluid.

Many configurations have been used. These include:
1 A square or rectangular screening area with drilling-fluid flow down the length.
2 Revolving, nonvibrating, cylindrical screens with longitudinal flow down the center axis.
3 Circular screens with flow from the center to the outside.

Other configurations have been tried but have not become commercial. The majority of shale shakers flow the drilling fluid over a rectangular screening surface. Larger solids are removed at the discharge end, with the smaller solids and drilling fluid passing through the screens into the active system.

The primary purpose of a shale shaker is to remove as many drilled solids as possible without removing excessive amounts of drilling fluid. These dual objectives require that cuttings (or drilled solids) convey off the screen while simultaneously most of the drilling fluid is separated and removed from the cuttings. Frequently, the only stated objective of a shale shaker is to remove the maximum quantity of drilled solids. Stopping a shale shaker is the simplest way to remove the largest quantity of drilled solids. Of course, this will also remove most of the drilling fluid. When disregarding the need to conserve as much drilling fluid as possible, the ultimate objective of reducing drilling costs is defeated.


Decanter Centrifuges

Decanter Centrifuges are a key component in drilling mud cleaning on a Drilling Rig. To maintain drilling mud in an optimum condition results in less waste, reduced operating cost and a high efficiency of the total solids control system.


Mechanical separation of solids from the mud system through the use of a decanter centrifuge is a highly-effective means of maintaining proper mud weight and viscosity. When properly used decanters enable users to maintain the mud properties within the prescribed range as per the drilling program. Typically, decanters are the last processing units in the line-up of solids control equipment.
