Hydrocyclones are related to centrifuges in that both are intended to separate heavies and lights by application of centrifugal force. The key difference is that hydrocyclones are passive separators capable of applying modest amounts of centrifugal force, whereas centrifuges are dynamic, spinning separators that are generally able to apply much more centrifugal force than hydrocyclones.
Another key difference between hydrocyclones and centrifuges is cost. Centrifuges are expensive precision rotating machines that often need sophisticated control, whereas hydrocyclones have no moving parts and usually no controls at all, so they are lower cost devices.
Hydrocyclones and centrifuges are complementary rather than competing devices. If gravity alone will settle a significant portion of your solids in a minute or two using a quick bottle test, you should investigate hydrocyclone separation. If settling takes much longer than this, then you may need a centrifuge or other separation method.
Old-fashioned desander and desilter delivery from DC Solid control
Desander and desilter is widely used in mud cleaning system. Following the progress of the time and high requirements of users. The desander and desilter all make greats progress. Desander is installed on top of the mud tank following shale shaker and vacuum degasser, but before the desilter. Desilter is installed on top of the mud tank following Desander. They also can be installed completely: in this case, they are installed on one deck shaker and called mud cleaner or mud conditioner.
Desander removes the abrasive solids from drilling mud which cannot be removed by shale shakers. Normally the solids diameter for desander to be separated would be 45~74μm, and 15~44μm for desilter.

Simplified Principle And Operation Of Mud Gas Separator
The mud/gas separator is designed to provide effective separation of the mud and gas circulated from the well by venting the gas and returning the mud to the mud pits. Small amounts of entrained gas can then be handled by a vacuum-type degasser located in the mud pits. The mud/gas separator controls gas cutting during kick situations, during drilling with significant drilled gas in the mud returns, or when trip gas is circulated up.
The operating principle of a mud/gas separator is relatively simple. The device is essentially a vertical steel cylindrical body with openings on the top, bottom, and side.
The mud and gas mixture is fed into the separator inlet and directed at a flat steel plate perpendicular to the flow. This impingement plate minimizes the erosional wear on the separator’s internal walls and assists with mud/gas separation. Separation is further assisted as the mud/gas mixture falls over a series of baffles designed to increase the turbulence within the upper section of the vessel. The free gas is then vented through the gas vent line, and mud is returned to the mud tanks.
Operating pressure within the separator is equal to the friction pressure of the free gas venting through the vent line. Fluid is maintained at a specific level (mud leg) within the separator at all times. If the friction pressure of the gas venting through the vent line exceeds the mud-leg hydrostatic pressure within the separator, a blow-through condition will result sending a mud/gas mixture to the mud tanks.
As one can readily see, the critical point for separator blow-through exists when peak gas flow rates are experienced in the separator. Peak gas flow rates should theoretically be experienced when gas initially reaches the separator.

The drilling cuttings will be drying by the high G shaker, and fluids will be catched by the tank under the shaker, a centrifuge feed pump will take the fluids and feed to a high speed decanter centrifuge, after treatment by the high speed decanter centrifuge, the fluids can return back the active mud system for resue.

Advantages of using decanter centrifuge for oilfield
Having effective solids control equipment is very important for any oilfield. Without having proper solids control, drills can encounter a variety of problems.
With a horizontal oilfield decanter centrifuge, the mixture of drilling liquid and cuttings and solids enter into the centrifuge. When it enters the centrifuge, it gets spun at an extremely high rate, sometimes as much as 3000 times the force of gravity. When this happens, the solids will separate from the liquids. When they are separated, the drilling liquid can be decanted and eventually returned to the mud tank where it can be replaced into the borehole for efficient drilling.
