Desander is used in the second phase of drilling fluid purification to remove nocuous solid, stabilize drilling liquid properties and improve drilling efficiency. The larger internal diameter of desander is, the greater fluid capacity is processed, so for desander with cone more than 10 inches, it is able to remove about 50% of solids within 40-50 micro range at 500 Gal/min.
DCDS series desander overcomes shortcomings of the original sand removal process. The hydrocyclone of desander is provided with a rotating component, and its cylindrical wall is with a separation window. The upper cylinder wall of the rotating member, a set of tapered grooves and liquid inlet pipe constitute drilling fluid lifting component. Impeller of desander is set at the interior of the component, and sand regulator controls the amount of sand.
Desander includes two 12-inch(305-mm) diameter polyurethane hydroclones slant mounted over the shaker. Each desander clone includes four replaceable wear resistant polyurethane sections that are joined together with quick release stainless steel clamps. The desander is furnished with an 8-inch(203-mm) diameter feed manifold and a 10-inch (254-mm) diameter discharge manifold and a 0-60 psi (4.1-bar) pressure gauge. The desander also includes a solids discharge trough to distribute the hydrocyclone underflow evenly onto the screening surface.

Desander uses centrifugal force to separate. Desander uses centrifugal pump to supply mud, then the mud flow into hydrocyclone along tangent of cyclone, and the mud’s structure was destroyed under the action of centrifugal force. Under the action of gravity, solid particles along the inner wall sink spirally and was discharged from the bottom of cyclone then falls on the following shale shaker, liquid was discharged from the top of the cyclone.
Desander unit that efficiently removes sand and silt-sized particles down to a 70 micron cut. Customized mud desanders are available depending on the volume of the mud being cleaned.
Use features of mud desilter compare with desander
Desilters are similar to desanders with the only difference in the size of sand particles that are removed by two devices. Desilters remove sizes which are 20 microns or lesser whereas desanders removes the sizes from 50 to 70 microns.
Desilters are what smaller diameter hydrocyclones are typically referred to as, and will generally be used directly after a desander. Occasionally desanders will not be necessary and the desilter will operate immediately after the scalping pass. While desilting cones can achieve a finer cut, down to 20 micron, than desander cones they cannot process at as high of a rate per cone and are headered together in order to meet the desired throughput.

The Underflow will be recirculated over a shaker and processed again while the overflow will be free to move on to the next stage, whether it’s a centrifuge, chemical treatment, or a finished product.
